The OpenScience Laboratory

The OpenScience Laboratory is an online laboratory that brings interactive practical science to students anywhere and anytime the internet is available. The laboratory features investigations based on on-screen instruments, remote access experiments and virtual scenarios using real data.

The OpenScience Laboratory launched, in 2013 with funding from the Wolfson Foundation, provides an authentic sense of place with access to real data through authentic interfaces. Several activities are available to all, while others are available only to registered users.

  • Hosts over 100 practical science engagements with on-screen instruments, remote access equipment, citizen science platforms and virtual scenarios.
  • Includes scaffolded activities suitable for preuniversity students.
  • Provides more than 100,000 student hours per annum of timetabled practical investigations for Open University students.
  • New activities regularly added.
  • Includes a diverse range of experiments ranging from virtual microscopes to remotely controlled auto-titrators.
